How can I have multiple expiry email addresses for my domain?

One of the biggest problems with domain name registrations is that for some domain names the expiry notifications (emails that go out from your registrar when your domain name is due to "run out") do NOT get delivered. In some cases, the expiry notification is not sent at all, but more likely is that the notice does not to the right email address!. Normal DNS (Domain Name Services) do not allow you to specify more than one administrative contact (which is the email address that these notices go out to) and therefore you could, potentially, be losing any expiry notifications for your domain names.

In lots of companies, people leaving, changing jobs or even over-zealous spam filters, cause the problem. The expiry notification email either get completely lost, deleted, or never even delivered to a real person! This can mean you're leaving yourself open to losing that domain name forever - not to be overly dramatic about it, but it can happen and we've known it to happen on many occasions.

I want to add more than one administrative contact

Regular DNS does not have the ability for you to create multiple expiry email addresses for your domain names. There are various ways around this but most of them require software installation or configuration, as well as technical knowledge, by distributing out emails from one address to multiple others.

However, the simplest way to be able to have more than one domain name expiry notification email address is to use Domain-Safe!

Yes, we would say that, but it's true! One of the main reasons we built this tool is to help people who could lose their domain names because they expire without being sent an email telling them about it.

Not to be unfair though, here are some methods you could use to re-create the functionality we give you even in our free account:

• Some domain name registrars do allow you to have multiple contacts as part of your account with them - this is not to say you actually have multiple expiry contacts, simply that the registrar's own control panel allows you to have multiple sub-accounts. In this way, some send expiry notifications to all the email addresses linked to your own account. However, apart from this being restricted to only certain registrars, it's also reliant on YOU being able to log in to your domain registrar's control panel. For a number of people this is difficult or impossible if the domain name was purchased on your behalf, perhaps by your ISP.

  Also, if your domain names are registered with more than one different registrar, it would be up to you to manage these alternative and additional email addresses across those registrars, and all the more frustrating if one allows you this technique but another doesn't!

• You could alternatively set up a Distribution List (as they are termed in Microsoft Exchange) or a Group (in Google Mail). This would allow you to register your domains with an administrative contact of the email address set up as a distribution group, and using gMail or Exchange, have it distribute, on receipt, to the email addresses you'd specify as part of that group. This method, apart from possibly requiring a change to how your email is managed, requires some technical expertise to implement, and at the end is just as prone to having the expiry emails going out to "dead" email addresses as just having one email contact.

With either of the above approaches, you will have to find out the login details of your registrar (possibly more than one!) and manually edit the details of each domain until they match your distribution list requirements.
